Nestled in the heart of Pahang, Malaysia, the Rompin State Park is a paradise for those who love the great outdoors. This three-day eco-adventure offers a mesmerizing journey from the bustling cityscapes of Kuala Lumpur to the lush, unspoiled rainforest landscapes of Rompin, with a myriad of memorable experiences ranging from night walks to witness nocturnal creatures to adventurous treks along age-old elephant trails, and culminating in the majestic sight of the Seri Mahkota Waterfall.
Kick-Off in Kuala Lumpur
As dawn broke over the skyscrapers of Kuala Lumpur, our motley crew of intrepid adventurers packed their bags, strapped on their boots and hit the road for the journey of a lifetime. Our destination? A slice of paradise tucked away in Pahang, Malaysia – Rompin State Park or “Taman Negeri Rompin,” as the locals call it.
The drive, which stretched out over 270 kilometers, was an experience in itself. As the cityscapes faded away and were replaced by the idyllic Malaysian countryside, the excitement within our crew bubbled up.
Into the Wild
The Rompin Rainforest Lodge was our home base. Warm, welcoming, and bustling with life, it was the perfect place to kick-start our wilderness adventure. After a quick meet-and-greet and briefing from the park guide, our crew dispersed to explore the Rainforest Discovery Centre.
The Rainforest Discovery Centre turned out to be a treasure trove of knowledge, packed with information about the park’s various plants, animals, and the broader ecosystem. The highlight, however, was a daring climb up an 80-meter long suspension bridge. Suspended over the Kinchin River, the bridge offered an awe-inspiring panoramic view of the rainforest canopy.
As dusk painted the sky in shades of purple and orange, we regrouped at the lodge for a sumptuous dinner, refueling for the much-anticipated night walk. Under the starlit sky, our guide led us through the nocturnal world of the rainforest, illuminating its hidden wonders. The night’s crowning glory was spotting a Flying Lemur — a sight that left us in awe of the forest’s rich biodiversity.
Of Elephant Trails and Waterfalls
After a hearty breakfast, we ventured deeper into the forest, ready for the Jeram Panjang Trekking adventure. Trudging along the same trails once walked by the majestic giants of the forest, the elephants, was a humbling experience.
We were treated to the refreshing sight of the pristine Jeram Panjang river flowing from Sungai Kinchin. For those brave enough, a swim in the crystal-clear stream of Sungai Kernam was a welcome respite after the morning’s trek.
As the afternoon sun painted dappled patterns through the rainforest canopy, we found ourselves at the base of the breathtaking Seri Mahkota Waterfall. It’s a geological marvel, cascading down 50-meters high across three levels, with a natural pool at its base. It was here that we spent the remainder of our day, splashing in the cool waters and basking in the tranquility of our surroundings.
Farewell, Rompin
The final morning in Rompin State Park came too soon. As we packed our bags and checked out of the lodge, we shared stories and memories over breakfast, a reminder of the incredible journey we had shared. While some of us headed back to the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur, a few others opted for a detour to Mersing Jetty, ready to extend their adventure to the idyllic Rawa Island or Tioman Island.
As the saying goes, “The journey is the destination.” And this journey through Rompin State Park proved just that. Every step through the lush rainforest, every creature we encountered, and every moment of tranquility shared among friends in the heart of nature was a testament to the beauty of the wild.
