Last month, I embarked on a thrilling adventure to Taman Negara, Malaysia’s oldest national park. Spanning across three states—Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan—this natural wonderland is a treasure trove of biodiversity. From the world’s longest canopy walkway to the highest peak in Peninsular Malaysia, Taman Negara offers an unparalleled experience for nature enthusiasts. But what made this trip truly unforgettable was the discovery of traces of a rare tiger near our resort. Here’s a recount of my three-day escapade.
Day 01: From Kuala Lumpur to Labu Sentral Jetty
We started our journey early in the morning from our hotel in Kuala Lumpur. It took us a 3-hour ride to Labu Sentral Jetty. The journey was scenic, but the real magic began when we boarded a boat for a 2-hour ride to Taman Negara. The boat ride was like a prelude to the grand symphony that is Taman Negara. We passed by quaint local villages and sailed through lush tropical rainforests. The river was teeming with life—kingfishers, hornbills, monkeys, monitor lizards, and even water buffaloes made appearances.
Upon arrival, we checked into our resort and registered with the National Park and Wildlife Department. The evening was reserved for a night jungle walk, guided by an experienced local. Though spotting wildlife in such dense forests is a bonus, the experience was surreal. The nocturnal plants and insects were fascinating, and the sounds of the rainforest were like music to the ears.
Day 02: Trekking, Canopy Walk, and Lata Berkoh—Plus a Midnight Surprise!
The second day was packed with activities. We started with a 1 ½ hour trek up Teresek Hill. The view from the top was breathtaking; on a clear day, you can see Mount Tahan, the highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia. Next was the canopy walkway, a marvel of engineering that allows you to experience the rainforest from 40 meters above the ground. This 530-meter long walkway is the world’s longest and offers a unique perspective on the forest canopy.
In the afternoon, we took a boat ride to Lata Berkoh, a series of cascading waterfalls. The journey itself was awe-inspiring, with pristine jungle scenery all around. At Lata Berkoh, we swam and relaxed, completely immersed in the serenity of nature. Lunch and dinner were served at the hotel, but the real feast was the experience itself.
A Midnight Surprise: Just when we thought the day couldn’t get any more exciting, we were awakened in the middle of the night by some unexpected visitors—a band of monkeys had entered our bungalow! These mischievous creatures helped themselves to our stash of chips, beers, and lemonade. While it was a bit alarming at first, we couldn’t help but marvel at their audacity and intelligence. It was a hilarious and unforgettable episode that added a dash of wildness to our already adventurous trip.
Day 03: Return to Kuala Lumpur
The third day marked the end of our adventure. We departed after lunch for a 3.5-hour overland journey back to Kuala Lumpur. Though the trip was coming to an end, the memories were indelible.
The Rare Tiger Sighting
What made this trip extraordinary was the discovery of traces of a rare tiger near our resort. Though we didn’t see the elusive creature, the mere evidence of its presence added an element of excitement and wonder to our journey. It was a humbling reminder of the rich biodiversity that Taman Negara harbors.
Why Taman Negara?
Taman Negara is not just a national park; it’s a living museum of natural history. The park is home to a plethora of activities like river canoeing, jungle tracking, and even cave exploration. Observation huts have been set up for tourists to safely observe wildlife. The park is also accessible by various means, including buses, taxis, and boats, making it a convenient destination.
Conclusion
Taman Negara is a must-visit for anyone who loves nature and adventure. From the thrilling boat rides to the mesmerizing trek up Teresek Hill, every moment spent here is a moment to cherish. And if you’re lucky, like we were, you might just find traces of some of the most elusive wildlife, reminding you of the beauty and fragility of our natural world.
